Safety Description:A poison by ingestion, intracerebral, and subcutaneous routes. The fatal dose is between 1/6 and 2 grains. Human reproductive effects by subcutaneous and intravenous routes: newborn drug dependence. An experimental teratogen. Experimental reproductive effects. Mutation data reported.
Resembles morphine in its general results, but acts more strongly on the respiration and is therefore more poisonous. Its depressant effects on the cerebrum appear to be greater than those of codeine. Large doses cause excitement and convulsions in animals and humans. The more common symptoms are headache; disturbance of vision; slow, small, regular pulse; restlessness; cramps in the extremities; slight cyanosis; slow, deep respiration and death from respiratory paralysis. A poisonous, habit-forming drug. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx. See also (−)-MORPHINE.
