Safety Description:A human poison by ingestion. Poison experimentally by ingestion, skin contact, intraperitoneal, intravenous, and subcutaneous routes. Human systemic effects by ingestion: acute renal failure, acute tubular necrosis, cough, diarrhea, dyspnea, headache, hypermotility, nausea or vomiting, other gastrointestinal effects, other pulmonary effects, ulceration or bleeding from stomach. An experimental teratogen. Experimental reproductive effects. Has a delayed damaging effect on the lung alveoli. Has caused fatal poisoning in humans, with severe injury to lungs. Has been implicated in aplastic anemia. An eye irritant. Mutation data reported. The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), USA, has concluded that contamination of marijuana with the herbicide paraquat may pose a serious threat to marijuana (cannabis) smokers, and issued a warning that marijuana contaminated with the herbicide paraquat could lead to permanent lung damage for regular and heavy users of marijuana. The maximum level of contamination permitted for domestic uses is 0.05 ppm paraquat; but paraquat has been found in marijuana samples at levels ranging from 3 to 2204 ppm, averaging 452 ppm. It tends to concentrate in lung tissue whether it is ingested or inhaled, and produces a condition called fibrosis, which reduces the capacity of the lung to absorb oxygen. Inhalation of paraquat creates a greater risk of lung damage than ingestion of an identical amount. An herbicide. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl⁻ and NO_x.
